WORLD ELDERS ABUSE AWARENESS DAY: 15 JUNE 2022 – DEPARTMENT OF PSYCHOLOGY
& DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMICS, POSTGRADUATE CENTRE
The department. of psychology and economics of postgraduate centre had organized an
awareness program on World Elderly Abuse Awareness Day(WEAAD) on 15 th June 2022.
The purpose of WEAAD is to provide an opportunity for communities around the world to
promote a better understanding of abuse and neglect of older persons by raising awareness of
the cultural, social, economic and demographic processes affecting elder abuse and neglect.
Many abuse and maltreatment in the elderly cases have never been reported because the elderly
is afraid to report it to the police or friends or family because sometimes it is their own family
that they are trying to protect.
Nearly 150 students participated in the awareness programme and students were sent to
different classrooms and explained about the importance of the day. They explained the ways
to identify abuse and measures to be taken to deal with global issue. The objective of the
Awareness program was to bring awareness about elder’s abuse and the tiny talks helped the
student to build confidence and social responsibility among themselves. The session was
conducted all in an effort to create awareness of elder abuse and engages students in
discussions on how to promote dignity and respect of older adults.
