A TALK ON DE-ADDICTION IN CONNECTION WITH WORLD ANTI- TOBACCO DAY: 31 MAY

“Smoking and chewing tobacco led to a short- term effects on health” - as quoted by Dr. Kubendran
The Department of Humanities organized A Talk on De-Addiction in connection with World Anti-
Tobacco Day which is observed on the 31 st May 2021. The talk was arranged by the department to
make students aware and understand the toll tobacco takes on life. Dr. A Kubendran was the
resource person for the day and 64 students participated in it.
Dr. A Kubendran is working as an Assistant Professor (Sr) in Sociology from VIT, Vellore, Chennai. He
has a total of 11 years in the field of education (7 years in teaching and 4 years in the field of
research).
The seminar was a one-day event which majorly focused on the ill effects and the De-Addiction
aspects in the consumption of Tobacco. The aim of World No Tobacco Day 2021 was to highlight the
links between the use of tobacco products and heart and other cardiovascular diseases. To increase
awareness within the broader public of the impact tobacco use and exposure to second-hand smoke
have on cardiovascular health. To create awareness among students in the consumption of Tobacco
and to analyse the De-addiction with respect to Tobacco Consumption.
The session helped the students to comprehend the risks posed by tobacco smoking and second-
hand smoke exposure; magnitude of death and illness globally from lung diseases caused by
tobacco, including chronic respiratory diseases and lung cancer, implications of second-hand
exposure for lung health of people across age groups etc. He spoke about the feasible actions and
measures that key audiences, including the public and governments, can take to reduce the risks to
lung health posed by tobacco.
