EXTENSION ACTIVITY - MENTAL HEALTH ASSESSMENT DRIVE: 12 MARCH 2022 -

The Department of Psychology, Postgraduate Centre took part in an extension activity on 12 th March
2022. The activity conducted was a “Mental Health Assessment Drive” for the children of SOS
Children’s Village, Bannerghatta Road, Bangalore. As a part of the drive, mental health assessments
were conducted for 16 children at the facility. The aim of this activity was to conduct mental
assessments for the students in need for it and to help the children’s village identify children in need of additional support and remedial intervention.
As a part of the activity, final year students, under the supervision of faculty of the department
conducted IQ assessments for children. The age group for which assessments were conducted was
from 9 to 14 years. Both boys and girls were a part of the assessment. Each student was assigned
with a child and assessment was conducted on a one-to-one basis. The children participated
enthusiastically in the assessment and it was a new learning experience for the final year
postgraduate students. A discussion was held with the director of the facility on how each child
fared in the assessment before sharing the reports and suggestions were given on how children can
be helped to improve their intellectual faculties.
Objective of the event was to conduct mental health assessments for children at the facility and
help identify those who are in need for additional support and remedial intervention. Final year
students also got a hands-on experience of how mental health assessments are conducted for
children and how a report in done. It was a great learning experience for the postgraduate students
and a day well spent.
