INTERNATIONAL WEBINAR ON GLOBAL CLIMATE CHANGE, SCIENCE AND BEYOND: 22
FEBRUARY 2023 - DEPARTMENT OF SCIENCE (BSC)
A session on global climate change, science and beyond was conducted on 22 nd February 2023 by the
department of science. For the convenience of the participants, it was an online webinar through
Google Meet. The resource person for the session was Dr. Muhammed Nayeem Mullungal, faculty
member, Department of Biological Environmental Sciences, Qatar University. The targeted audience
were faculty and research community members and hence a total of 143 faculties all over India
participated in the session.
Over the years, one of the most debated topic is global climate change. Global climate change refers
to the average long-term changes over the entire Earth. Human activities have been the main driver
of climate change, primarily due to the burning of fossil fuels (like coal, oil, and gas), which produces
heat-trapping gases, rising sea levels and Shrinking mountain glaciers. Dr. Muhammed Nayeem
Mullungal informed that oceans currently account for around 25 per cent of global N2O emissions,
and scientists are working to improve estimates of marine contributions. Most research has focused
on oxygen minimum zones, which are known as hotspots of N2O emissions. Warming of the ocean
due to climate change is driving the expansion of marine oxygen minimum zones globally. This has
led to speculation that N2O emissions from the oceans will continue to increase and further
accelerate climate change. This session was of great help especially to the research faculties.
