Departmental Activity on Basic Counselling Skills - MSc Psychology: Aug-Dec 2019

PsyLight Club – the Association of the PG Dept of Psychology - initiated Departmental Activity Hours besides the regular syllabus. Basic Counselling Skills was the title given for the activity and topics were selected based on it. These topics included Self Awareness, Listening Skills, Help for Helpers, Transactional Analysis, Boundaries, Emotional Intelligence, Anger Management and Mock Psychotherapy Session Practice.

These sessions gave opportunity to students to role-play as a client as well as a counsellor. This helped the students to gain practice to handle clients in real life situations. Overall 15 sessions were taken for the Mock Psychotherapy sessions practice. These Basic Counselling Skills had a total of 30 sessions spread across the semester between August-December 2019. Handouts were given to students on each topic handled. Mock practice sessions, with documentary screening, relaxation techniques along with handouts gave completeness for the activity. As the activity proved to be very useful and effective, PsyLight Club has geared up much more sessions with versatile topics in making students learning and effective and efficient process in the college. The activity was conducted under the supervision of Prof Mamatha. K.
