“AN INTERACTION WITH YOUR ALUMNI”: 2 ND NOVEMBER 2021: DEPT. OF PSYCHOLOGY - POSTGRADUATE CENTRE

The Department of Psychology, Postgraduate Centre organised “An interaction with your Alumni” on 2 nd of November 2021 at 11:45 am. The aim of the session was to provide the students a hands-on experience on SPSS, with special focus on the statistical analysis for tool development. The alumnus for the session was Joheender S, alumnus of St Francis de Sales College, Batch of 2016-18, MSc Psychology. A total of 11 students participated in the session.

Psychometric tool development is a part of the syllabus for postgraduate students of the department of Psychology. It involves various steps like identifying a topic, preparing the items, face validity, expert validity followed by statistical analysis. Students often lack the confidence with executing the different aspects in relation to the statistical analysis of tool development. Hence it was decided to provide the students an interaction with the Alumnus, so that they get a better clarity on the steps that tool development entails.

The session began with a general orientation about psychometric tool development by the speaker. He described on point the various steps in tool development starting from choosing a particular topic for developing a tool. He interacted with the students and discussed with them about how imperative it is for a tool to be reliable and valid. He moved on to give the students on how to use SPSS for analysis of the psychometric tool that they developed. Each step of the analysis and the pitfalls that can happen while analysing and interpreting the data using SPSS was explained in detail.

The session ended with a question-and-answer session followed by a vote of thanks by Ms. Felicia Saldanha. Objective of the session was to help the students understand the aspects of psychometric tool development with a hands-on experience of statistical analysis using SPSS. Students gained an understanding of the statistical analysis to be done for the psychometric tool that they had developed as a part of their study and they were benefitted by the hands-on training given by the alumnus of our institution.
