FIELD VISIT TO STUDY THE FLORICULTURE FARMING: 27 NOVEMBER 2021 – DEPARTMENT

The Department of Economics conducted a field visit to study about floriculture farming. The event
coordinator Prof Arun B along with faculty member Prof. Shiva Kumar and students of M.A
Economics visited a nearby flower farming in Harohalli Gate, Dommasandra, Bangalore on 27 th
November 2021.
Floriculture or flower farming is the study of growing and marketing flowers and foliage plants.
Floriculture includes cultivation of flowering and ornamental plants for direct sale or for use as raw
materials in cosmetic and perfume industry and in the pharmaceutical sector. It also includes
production of planting materials through seeds, cuttings, budding and grafting. In simpler terms
floriculture can be defined as the art and knowledge of growing flowers to perfection. Flower
farming is very popular in Bangalore, there are many reasons for it. Some of them are good climate
suitable for floriculture, availability of local market, flower auctions centre in Bengaluru, presence of
international airport, availability of cheap labour from neighbouring states such as, availability of
funds by various banks and govt. subsidy in setting up of greenhouse for flower cultivation.
The students connected with the farmers and learnt about the opportunities and challenges faced in
the felid of floriculture. The farmers shared their knowledge about floriculture farming, the
techniques used, the methods followed as well as various loans and other facilities that the Primary
Land Development Banks and various other banking institutions offers. The students from this field
visit have got real experience of cultivating floriculture and conditions of farmers in the field of
floriculture.
