SKILL DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOP ON “EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION
SKILLS”: 19 FEBRUARY 2022 - DEPARTMENT OF PSYCHOLOGY (PG)
The Department of Psychology, Postgraduate Centre, conducted the second skill development
workshop for the students on “Effective Communication Skills” on 19 February 2022. The
resource person for the workshop was Ms. Nida Syeda, who is a Ph.D. scholar with Christ
(Deemed-to-be) University, Bangalore. Her area of research is on different modes of control
that influence knowledge production on user generated online platforms. Her areas of
interests are digital humanities and cultural studies. Objective of the event was to make the
students understand the enormity of effective communication and developing the right skills
to lead a successful life.
She began with an interaction with the students on how important they think is
communication in their lives. She then moved on to speak about the importance of spatiality
in communication. She explained with examples as to how people differ in their
communication when they are in a personal and professional space. The different aspects of
communication like kinesics, paralinguistics and chronemics and the importance of
organising thoughts were discussed. She elaborated about the different skills that are involved
in being an effective communicator. The speaker took all efforts to explain this through a
wide variety of activities and this was an eventful and refreshing experience for the
postgraduate students of the department.
